The managing director of Carbon Specialities (Thompson GRP Ltd), Allan Thompson, started out as a boat builder, served his apprentice years at the shipyards on the Tyne and went on to become one of the most respected bost builders. Subsequently he moved on to form Thompson GRP, which has been running for over 25 years.
Allan and his professional team have traditionally designed and constructed bespoke research models for a customer base including universities, international yacht teams and the MOD.
One of the most unusual contracts involved construction of a working scale model of the Mary Rose for Channel 4’s series, Secrets of the Dead.
Most recently Thompson GRP has provided working scale models to the Mirabella Team following construction of the world's biggest single masted yacht!
Also another recent project was a complete redesign of a TVR. We spent a large portion of the time on designing an aerodynamic shell.
On the basis of highly developed expertise working with glass fibre reinforced plastic, we are increasingly developing production of carbon components. Rapid demand is driven predominantly because of the high quality of our products.
